Battle of Bury St Edmunds
In 1173 a battle was fought, in Fornham All Saints. Robert Whitehands, Earl of Leicester raised an army of 3000 Flemings to fight against the King Henry I. The army marched to Framlingham to be welcomed by Hugh Bigod. They went on to sack Haughley Castle, then marched to Bury.
There they met Humphrey de Boun with his army, just back from fighting the Scots. He surprised Whitehands and forced them back to Fornham St Genevieve, where the entire army was slaughtered or taken prisoner.
